Léa Roback was born in Montreal in 1903 to Polish Jewish immigrants. She became well-known for being a union organizer for the International Ladies’ Garment Workers’ Union in 1937. Léa Roback actively supported Fred Rose in his Montreal election campaign as well as Thérèse Casgrain in her campaign for women suffrage in the 1930s. Originally, a strong pro-Communist, Léa Roback became a pacifist once the horrors committed in the Soviet Union under Joseph Stalin were made known. Roback would later become a constant promotor of peace and environmental protection, access to legal abortion, and rights of immigrant and Indigenous women.
