October Newsletter Preview : Orange Shirt Day Highlight
Yesterday’s National Day of Truth and Reconciliation builds on the grassroots momentum of Orange Shirt Day (#OrangeShirtDay), which was launched in 2013 to call attention to 165 years of residential school experiences. Phyllis Webstad, a residential school survivor, was one of many children who were severed from their family, community, and culture. In 1973, Phyllis Webstad was stripped from her beautiful orange shirt on the first day of school and never saw it again. Now, Phyllis Webstad is the Executive Director of the Orange Shirt Society and continues telling her experiences to spread awareness of the impact of residential schools.
