Wednesday September 23, 2020
September 23, 2020 — The Consulate General of Canada in New York partnered with DOC NYC, the pre-eminent U.S. documentary film festival, on a Spotlight on Canada for their 2020 edition. As part of this Spotlight, a case study of the hit Canadian film, Once were Brothers, directed by Daniel Roher, was presented in their “DOC NYC PRO Day: New Realities in Distribution & Audience Engagement” on September 23. The panel was moderated by Thom Powers, artistic director of DOC NYC, and included the director, Daniel Roher, and four key industry executives from Canadian production company, White Pine Pictures and U.S. distribution companies, Imagine and Magnolia Pictures. This high level group discussed the film’s successful journey from its beginning as a small Canadian documentary being made by a young unknown director to opening TIFF and DOC NYC 2019 through today and the effects of Covid-19 on its sales and distribution.
